Art in Progress by Leonora Hamill

Winner of the 2012 HSBC Prize for Photography, the Franco-British artist Leonora Hamill captures, in her series « Art in Progress », empty spaces of collective art practice.

« I photograph the studios in Art in Progress, when the students have just left or will be returning shortly and the collective energy is palpable. In this case I think the idea of the other is heightened by his/her absence. The space condenses the passage of time, the passage of students, of their labour and of their hopes ».

Sascha Weidner…enduring beauty

” The strongest impulse in my work is my own life, an interplay of contradictions:the beautiful becomes ugly, the ugly beautiful. The romantic collides with the radical”. Sascha Weidner, berliner photographer.

THE BIG OUTSIDE BY RYAN MCGINLEY

From his past of skateboarder, the American photographer Ryan McGinley kept a strong taste for movement, speed and freedom. Carried by a positive and spontaneous energy, his work is a tribute as much to the nature as youth. Wasn’t his first book, in 2000, called “The Kids Are Alright”…?

We have been bewitched by the “dark poetry” of the French photographer Aëla Labbé. Not only tanks to  it old-fashion look that we could often see today, but more for the melancholia and “weird” atmosphere , that could even make us uncomfortable. It’s nostalgic but more in the evocation of the childhood fragility and it’s also sensual, disturbing and a little bit magical…

THE SIOUX BY MARKUS KLINGENHAGER

Going off the beaten track, the report photography sometimes adopts the codes of the studio photo (sophisticated lightings, staged characters, …), blurring the borders of photographic styles. It’s the case with the German photographer Markus Klingenhäger who was interested in the Native American and more exactly in Lakota Sioux of the Pine Ridge Reservation, in the South Dakota. No miserabilism in his series “Darkwhite”, photographed with the 6×6 chamber, but rather an interrogation, a light strangeness maintained by the isolation of the people and the empty landscapes.

HIP HIPSTAMATIC

After the Polaroid, photo booths or Lomography looks, take the effect of the Hipstamatic 100,  a very rare plastic toy camera created unofficially in 1982. Add the endless rising trend for retro look in photography and you obtain a buzz around the experience of the Hipstamatic essence through an Iphone app !

A singular and authentic feel celebrated this month with the opening of the first exhibition showcasing iPhone hipstamatic shots (Orange Dot Gallery – London).

DATTA

DATTA is an art bookstore freshly opened in Lyon. Inside: a good choice of trendy books from emerging visual culture. It’s also a gallery and below, the two artists they have decided to focus on.

This French photographer shoots the rock and street subcultures among others that surround him.
Bikers, strip-teasers, tattooed guys and tattooist are often his darling main subjects,  moreover he has signed the next Tatoo Art Festival calendar and contributed to several Sang Bleu magazine issues. For sure, we like these strong « badass » characters, their attitude and « truly » face, but also, how he staged them, in their almost touching,  daily environment.

Gina Kelly

Big gap with this American artist, who will be displayed in January. We don’t know a lot about her,  just she has created some artworks for Andrew Bird… We love her fifties faded tones and her naïve style, a bit folk.
Other illustrations here.

Gina Kelly
